| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the importance of reducing mosquito levels on golf courses due to the appearance of West Nile Virus. Gives several steps which may keep mosquito populations in check, including "eliminate the breeding grounds" by removing standing water, stocking ornamental pools with mosquito-eating fish, such as Gambusia or goldfish, using a "biorational" insecticide which will harm only mosquito larvae, and using "mosquito dunks" which add a bacterium toxic only to mosquitos to the water. Mentions that bats do not have a significant impact on mosquito populations. Discusses a new "bug-zapper-like" device which mimics the body temperature and carbon dioxide expenditure of warm-blooded animals. Gives tips on how to avoid personal exposure to mosquitos. Describes some symptoms of West Nile encephalitis and when to seek treatment. |
