Abstract/Contents: | Provides an extensive case study of a superintendent's battle with anthracnose. Describes the extent of the infection, saying that "what was by all comparisons one of our best greens, with only a minor infection of anthracnose earlier in the week, was gone, and I mean GONE...[it] went straight to dirt overnight." Outlines the previous management practices on the greens in which they were "abused as a matter of routine" in "the name of playability." Discusses steps taken by the club after infection in order to prevent future problems, especially the removal of shade-causing trees and maintenance of a consistent stimpmeter reading of 9 to 9.5 inches. Details some practices which were changed in the wake of the infection, including increased aerification, nematode testing, earlier application of plant protectants, raising the gallons of water per thousand square feet ratio from 1.1 to 2.25 in order to increase the effectiveness of fungicides, and adjusting the mowing height and rollers. Concludes by emphasizing the importance of good communication, saying that "I do believe that I lived to tell about [the experience] because of some very good communication between the Board of Directors, the membership and myself." |
