Abstract/Contents:This study determined appropriate rates of Rubigan for controlling Poa annua and observed phytotoxic effects on desired turf. Treatment rates were 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, and 0.25 oz ai/1000 ft2. In the bentgrass study, both bentgrass and Poa annua showed increasing phytotoxicity with increasing rates of Rubigan. Poa annua was quick to recover while bentgrass still showed some phytotoxicity two months after the last application. Phytotoxic results were not as severe on the Kentucky bluegrass site. On this site, one Poa annua population was dead by August. Disappearance of Poa annua could be attributed to many factors- heat, lack of water, or Rubiganm. In September, germination of Poa annua was very slow. This suggests that possibly Rubigan was creating a preemergence growth effect on Poa annua. Rubigan is ineffective on perennial Poa annua biotypes.
