Abstract/Contents:Discusses soil holding capacities, how they are measured and how they affect nutrient levels. Explains that "a soils holding capacity is measured as Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC). Some of the better soil testing labs will provide a more complete evaluation of holding capacity listed at Total Exchange Capacity or TEC." Describes which soils receive higher ratings, stating that "soils with a high CEC are heavy clay based soils whils soils with low CEC are light sandy soils." Discusses the confusing aspects of reading a soil test, explaining that "determining how much nutrient a soil should have is completely relative to the soil's holding capacity or its CEC." Suggests keeping soils in balance by making sure the percentages of nutrients recorded in the soil never change. Describes the difficulties involved in changing a soil's holding capacity. Explains that "soil amendments such as top dressing, physical amendment (zeolites or calcined clays) or organic fertilizers all can change the holding capacity of a soil." Points out that "remember that by changing the physical structure of the soil you will affect the soil's ability to hold nutrients. This can in turn impact mircobial activity and nutrient mobility."
