Abstract/Contents: | Discusses how to successfully choose and use protective turf covers. Says that "the use of covers alone is not an effective solution for protecting turf subjected to unhealthy conditions." Explains that turf is less vulnerable to winter kill when the plants have "large crowns; deep, thick and white roots; and minimal thatch." Lists summer and fall practices which can promote these conditions in grasses, including adequate soil drainage, appropriate fungicide use to control root and crown diseases, decreased mowing frequency, increased mowing height, reduced soil compaction, and the use of effective biostimulants. Discusses the differences between impermeable and permeable turf covers. Explains the features of effective turf covers, including non-sticky material, adequate ventilation, and presence of a UV-light stabilizer. |
