Abstract/Contents: | SUMMARY: "An experiment is described in which the effects of three mechanical treatments (spiking, hollow-tine coring and scarification) on water infiltration rates of a sand rootzone where studied. Hollow-tine coring and acarification were carried out as pre-season treatments only, whereas spiking continued throughout the season of wear. Artificial wear treatments were used to simulate the action of play during the winter months. The results showed that spiking was a beneficial treatment increasing infiltration rate by a minimum of 10 mm hr-1. Scarification had no effect. The results for hollow-tine coring showed large increases in infiltration rates before wear but during wear the results were ambiguous. Large season variations in infiltration rates were observed which were thought to be due to the interaction of wear and frost. The practical implications for ground maintenance, especially those with under-soil heating are discussed." |
