Abstract/Contents:Discusses different reasons for golf course renovations. Addresses the problem of "golfer frustration...following a renovation" focusing on "unfair expectations of perfection upon course opening." States that "improvements, although long-lasting, are seldom immediately noticeable" and gives the examples of "bunker sand requir[ing] time to settle and become firm" and putting greens being "very firm during the first year or two following renovation." Also mentions surface irregularity as another common complaint. Discusses "unforeseen events than can occur during a renovation," such as heavy rainfall, the problems caused by such events, and strategies, such as sodding, to deal with them. Emphasizes the importance of good communication in "developing fair expectations and a successful renovation" and specifically of communicating "the scope of the project as well as the amount of time necessary for construction and grow-in" as well as communicating "the time needed for maturation and the conditions to expect during that time." Discusses different means of communicating with golfers, including the golf club newsletter, presentations to the golf club members, "scheduling a Turfgrass Advisory Service visit with a USGA agronomist," "hosting renovation tours of small groups of golfers," and websites. Concludes that "the key to a successful renovation is to develop realistic expectations prior to the renovation and communicate them to the membership throughout the entire project."
