| Abstract/Contents: | Describes Holman Griffin's experience as a USGA Green Section agronomist in the sixties as "a wonderful learning experience and a wonderful life experience." States that "most of us Green Section agronomists were flying about 100,000 miles a year, and when on the ground it was not unusual to drive 1,600 miles a week...We all revered and respected Dr. Marvin Ferguson as our leader and felt he had a handle on the answer to any turf question as much as any man alive." Describes how Holman "studied the possibility of all agronomists becoming pilots and traveling the country in our own airplanes." Lists "some of the pioneers of turf" that Holman "was privileged to visit and travel [with] many times." Offers "some words from Monty Moncrief as sage advice for the future: 'Stay on the side of the grass.'" |
