| Abstract/Contents: | Suggests that "as a game played in a natural setting, golf presents far more than a recreational outlet for golfers. Golf courses are diverse landscapes that can be managed to showcase regional plant communities and wildlife habitats - including some of our most valuable: wetlands." Discusses the delineation of wetlands, stating that "wetland delineation is complicated by the fact that wetland boundaries are often highly variable, since water levels fluctuate from year to year." Lists "a variety of methods" used by experts "to identify and mark a wetland boundary, including site surveys, aerial photography, GIS maps, soil surveys, and national wetland inventory maps." Describes the process of on-site observation, including the three things most looked at: "vegetation, soils, and hydrology." Discusses how wetland regulations apply to golf courses. States that "Section 404 of the Clean Water Act (33 U.S.C. 1344) prohibits the discharge of dredged or fill material into waters of the United States without a permit from the Corps of Engineers." Lists specific activities that require permits. Discusses when golf courses should apply for permits. |
