Abstract/Contents: | SUMMARY: The European crane fly (Tipula paludosa Meigen) has become a serious economic pest on turfgrass and forage in British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon. Insecticide trials conducted over a four-year period at four locations determined the efficacy of: Oftanol (Isophenphos), 1-methylethyl 2-[[ethoxy[1-methylethyl)-amino] phosphinothioyl] oxy] benzoate; Ficam (bendiocarb), 2,2 dimethyl-1,3 benzodioxyl-4-yl methylcarbamate; Proxol (trichlorofon), Dimethyl (2,2,2-trichloro-1-hydroxyethyl) phosphonate; Dursban (chlorpyrifos), 0,0-diethyl 0-3,5,6 trichloro-2-pyridyl)-phosphorothioate; Sevin (carbaryl), 1 napthyl N-methylcarbamate; Dymet (20% methoxychlor technical) 2,2-bis(p-methoxyphenyl)-1,1,1-trichloroethane plus 10% Diazinon, 0,0-Diethyl 0-(2-isopropyl-4-methyl-6-pryimidinyl); and Cyfluthrin (Baythroid), Cyano (4-fluoro-3-phenoxyphenyl) methyl-3-(2,2-dichloroethenyl) -2,2-dimethyl-cyclo-propanecarboxylate on crane fly larvae. The trials were conducted on mixed stands of Agrostis tenuis (colonial bentgrass) and Poa annua (annual meadow grass). Larval feeding damage was not apparent until larval numbers exceeded 215 m-2. All materials with the exception of Cyfluthrin effectively controlled fly larvae in all years except 1985 when treatments were applied somewhat late in the season." |
