Abstract/Contents:SUMMARY: "This paper describes part of a programme of work by the Sports Turf Research Institute on contract to the Directorate of Rural Affairs of the Department of the Environment. Four trials were sown in 1984 on "Operation Eyesore" sites in Bradford, West Yorkshire, with the main purpose of comparing two turf-type cultivars of perennial ryegrass, 'Elka' and 'Lorina', with the well-known cultivar 'Aberystwyth S.23'. The turf-type cultivars were sown by themselves and with 'Aberystwyth S.184' wild white clover; a few cultivars of other species and the standard "Operation Eyesore" mixture were also included in the trials. The trials received the intermittent mowing management normal to such sites, apart from one trial on which a growth retardant treatment (mefluidide at 0.4 kg ha-1) was made in 1985 on half of each plot. A fifth trial, not specifically sown for the purpose, was also treated in 1985 with mefluidide (0.4 kg ha-1) and paclobutrazol (1.25 kg ha-1). Assessments on all trials in 1984-5 included cover estimation, height measurement, and scoring for presumed acceptability to a manager or the general public. Both turf-type cultivars of perennial ryegrass gave very good results in nearly all respects. 'Lorina' was consistently the shortest of the three ryegrass cultivars, though generally not significantly different from 'Elka'. With the seed samples used, 'Lorina' was slightly less effective in initial establishment than 'Elka', and in summer 'Lorina' was sometimes less green than other more vigorously growing cultivars, but in general 'Lorina' was the outstandingly successful cultivar in these trials and 'Elka' nearly as good. The sites had high phosphate and pH levels, and in these conditions the use of white clover was disadvantageous. 'Boreal' creeping red fescue was included in three trials, and was significantly taller than 'Lorina' on several occasions, though it also gave a more attractive sward than 'Lorina' at times, especially after the vigorous growth in the first twelve months or so had begun to be controlled by mowing. The growth retardant treatments only saved one cut under the intermittent mowing regimes on these sites, and did not show any other clear benefits. 'Lorina' unsprayed was in some respects superior during May-June to other cultivars treated with mefluidide, although less appealing visually in August."
