Abstract/Contents:SUMMARY: "Water infiltration rate was measured on a fertilizer trial in which plots received rates of nitrogen ranging from 0-625 kg ha-1 yer-1 with potassium and phosphorus applied at rates proportional to the nitrogen input. The trial was carried out on a sand rootzone overlying a gravel drainage carpet. It was found that infiltration rate was strongly dependent on the fertilizer treatments applied over the previous two years. The rate declined rapidly from 91 mm hr-1 at zero N to 11 mm hr-1 at 225 kg ha-1 N an then increased to 20 mm hr-1 at 625 kg ha-1 N. The results are explained in terms of the changing amounts of above-ground biomass and root biomass, and the practical implications of the findings for sand-based pitches are discussed.
