Abstract/Contents:"Dollar spot, caused by Sclerotinia homoeocarpa, is a common and persistant disease of turfgrasses. Our objective was to examine the genetic diversity and pathogenic aggressiveness among isolates collected from two cool-season and five warm-season grasses over a wide geographic range within [the] United States. These isolates clustered into three groups based on similarity of their rDNA ITS sequences. However, isolates were not grouped according to the host or geographic location from which they were collected. For example, isolates from different hosts and/or geographic locations sometimes had identical ITS sequences. Other isolates from the same host and turfgrass sward were placed in different ITS similarity groups. Isolates also varied in pathogenicity to Kentucky bluegrass following inoculation. On average, isolates from one ITS group caused more disease (P < 0.01) on Kentucky bluegrass following inoculations than isolates from the other groups. These results suggest that differences in pathogenicity may be associated with the ITS groups."
