Abstract/Contents:"Lysobacter enzymogenes strain C3 reduced severity of foliar fungal diseases in turfgrass and bean in past field tests. Furthermore, treatment of sugarbeet seed with C3 suppressed Pythium damping off, but application to wheat seed was ineffective against seedling diseases. In this study, we found that C3 produces a root growth inhibitor that acts on monocots (wheat and tall fescue) and dicots (tobacco) but not on sugerbeet [sugarbeet]. Application of C3 cells or fluid from broth [both] cultures to wheat seeds or radicles [radicals] resulted in significant reduction in root length of seedlings, while other strains of L. enzymogenes did not have the same effect. These findings suggest that root growth inhibition by C3 was due to a specific factor rather than high cell numbers or general secondary metabolites. This was confirmed by the fact that the root inhibitory effect could be removed from C3 culture fluids through ethyl acetate extraction or soil absorption. Although no negative effects have been observed from foliar application of C3 in numerous experiments, the root growth inhibitor is a concern when using C3 as a seed or root treatment."
