Abstract/Contents:"Isolates of Colletotrichum graminicola, recovered turfgrass with symptoms of anthracnose, were examined for genetic variability using mtDNA RFLPs, vegetative compatibility, and colony and spore morphology. RFLP and sequence analysis of introns from two nuclear DNA genes also were performed. Turfgrass isolates were compared to isolates from several different monocot hosts. Both the mtDNA and nuclear DNA markers indicate that turf isolates are clearly distinct from other isolates of C. graminicola from other monocot species. Among the turf isolates, 72 of 84 isolates examined thus far belonged to a single mtDNA and intron RFLP haplotype; minor variation was observed among the 12 additional isolates. Evaluating pathogenicity and virulence in this pathosystem represents a significant weakness to the overall understanding of the biology of this pathogen and efforts are underway to help better understand this important phenotype."
