Abstract/Contents: | "The Louisiana House: Home and Landscape Resource Center is a project recently undertaken by the LSU AgCenter to provide an on-campus exhibit in Baton Rouge, La that will feature sustainability in home living and landscaping. The project is being developed on a 7-acre site and will include a permanent, evolving showcase house, educational landscape exhibits, and a teaching center. Similar efforts are on-going at the Florida House Learning Center and Utah House. The LSU AgCenter projects will integrate and balance the criteria of resource-efficient, durable, healthy, practical, and convenient. Educational outreach to consumers, professionals and youth will address energy, termites, water pollution, indoor air quality, hurricane and flood issues, waste management, and economic viability. Landscape and horticulture oriented themes will include plant adaptability and selection, landscape structures, display gardens, environmental management, fertilization and nutrient management, integrated pest management, energy conservation, soil conservation and composting/recycling. The project was initiated in 2000 and plans are for house and landscape ground-breaking to occur in 2003 with completion in 2004. A capital fund raising campaign has a goal of $1 million with approximately $400,000 currently pledged." |
