Abstract/Contents:"Terrestrial blue-green algae (e.g., Lyngbya, Nostoc, Oscillatoria) are a common problem on surfaces of greens and tees in Florida, especially during the summer rainy season. The algae will develop into crusts and slimes that prevent the turfgrass from growing back into the affected area. Since 1991, a series of experiments have been established to evaluate the use of fungicides to prevent the surface algae from developing and to eliminate the algae once they have developed. Fungicides that have been evaluated include: fosetyl-Al, mancozeb (various formulations), chlorothalonil (various formulations and rates), and quaternary ammonium salts (various rates). Mancozeb and chlorothalonil fungicides were most effective when used preventatively, either prior to conducive weather patterns or shortly after they begin. An application timing interval of 14 days was most effective during very conducive weather conditions, but 28 days would be adequate if environmental conditions were not as intense. No control, preventatively or curatively, of surface algae was observed using fosetyl-Al or the quaternary ammonium salts."
