Abstract/Contents:"Dollar spot (Sclerotinia homoeocarpa) of amenity turf in Michigan occurs in two epidemics; one from late June to mid-July and a second from mid-August through October. Examination of isolates collected from dollar spot lesions throughout the season revealed that seasonal epidemics were not due the presence of separate pathogens. Mycelial compatibility reactions between isolates identified seven mycelial compatibility groups (MCG) among over 900 isolates form seven locations. Most MCGs were present throughout the season while one MCG was present only in the late epidemic. Nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) sequences showed 90% similarity to the ascigerous and sterile type cultures of S. homoeocarpa and 88% similarity to the teleomorphic type culture. Alignment of S. homoeocarpa ITS1 sequence with those of genera to which it is likely related suggest that it is most closely related to Rutstroemia henningsiana and R. cuniculi with 88% similarity. The ITS1 sequence of the teleomorphic type culture of S. homoeocarpa was identical to that of R. cuniculi.
