Abstract/Contents:"A multispectral radiometer (MSR) was used to obtain reflectance values from the surface of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) cv. Penncross during three brown patch epidemics: May, June and August 1996. The MSR contained eight photodiodes which detect reflectance as a proportion of incoming sunlight in eight discrete wavelengths: 460 nm (blue light) to 810 nm (infrared [IR]). Spectral signatures (reflectance vs. wavelength) and visual disease severity assessments were obtained from fungicide-treated plots and turf artificially inoculated with Rhizoctonia solani AG 2-2 throughout each epidemic. A significant reduction in IR reflectance was noted on inoculated turf prior to visible disease symptoms in May and August. Visible light reflectance was increased and IR reflectance was reduced significantly when brown patch symptoms were present. Linear regression analysis indicated that reflectance values for red, IR and combinations of these wavelengths may provide useful indices in brown patch severity assessment. The MSR has potential for use in prediction and assessment of brown patch in creeping bentgrass."
