Abstract/Contents:"Stenotrophomanas maltophelia C3, a chitinolytic strain from Kentucky bluegrass, was evaluated for control of leaf spot on tall fescue, caused by B. sorokiniana. Tall fescue plants were sprayed with C3 at 103 to 109 CFU/ml 24 h before inoculation with pathogen conidia, and then were incubated in a growth chamber. C3 inhibited conidial germination on leaf surfaces, and it reduced lesion numbers and percent infected leaf area as compared to non-treated controls. The degree and duration of leaf spot suppression was directly related to nubmers of C3 applied. Application of C3 at 109 CFU/ml reduced lesion numbers and percent infected area by over 85 and 95% 10 days after inoculation. C3 at 103 CFU/ml reduced lesion numbers 4 days after inoculation, but had no effect on lesion development after 10 days. Colloidal chitin (0.2% w/v) applied with 109 CFU/ml of C3 did not affect biocontrol efficacy. When lower cell densities of C3 were amended with chitin, biocontrol efficacy was elevated to or above the levels conferred by 10-fold higher populations of C3. Chitin amendments increased C3 populations on leaf surfaces by as much as 1.4 log units. Therefore, C3 is an effective biocontrol agent for leaf spot and its chitinolytic property can be exploited for selective enhancement."
