Abstract/Contents:"Chitin applied with Stenotrophomonas maltophilia strain C3 enhanced C3 colonization of tall fescue and biocontrol of leaf spot caused by Bipolaris sorokiniana (Bs). In this study, chitinase production by C3 in vitro and in vivo was investigated. Colloidal chitin and specific fungal cell walls induced chitinase production in broth culture. More chitinase was detected in cultures containing cell walls of Bs or Rhizoctonia solani than in cultures with Pythium ultimum cell walls, although C3 growth was nearly the same in the different media. A higher molecular weight (>8000 Daltons) fraction of C3 culture fluids was chitinolytic, and was more inhibitory than the lower molecular weight fraction to conidial germination and hyphal growth by Bs on agar and on tall fescue leaf blades; these properties were heat labile. Chitinase activity detected on tall fescue leaves colonized by C3 was greatly elevated over that of leaves without C3. Colloidal chitin amendments with C3 further increased chitinase activity on leaves. Antagonism against Bs by C3 in the phyllosphere and enhancement of biocontrol activity by chitin amendments, therefore, appear to be related to chitinase production."
