Abstract/Contents:"A multispectral radiometer (MSR) was used to obtain reflectance values from the surface of three creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) cultivars. The MSR contained eight photodiodes which detect reflectance (radiance) as a proportion of incoming sunlight (irradiance) in eight discrete wavelenghts: 460 nm (blue light) to 810 nm (mid infrared [IR]) at 50 nm intervals. Spectral signatures (percent reflectance vs. wavelength) were obtained from fungicide-treated and artificially inoculated turf. The turf was inoculated with Rhizoctonia solani AG2-2 by dispersing fungus-infested grain into the grass canopy. Reflectance of visible light was significantly increased when brown patch was present in each of the cultivars tested. Conversely, IR reflectance was reduced. Linear regression analysis (x = spectral data and y = visual assessments of disease severity) indicated that reflectance values for red, IR and combinations of these wavelengths may provide useful indices in brown patch severity assessment. The MSR has the potential to be a rapid and objective tool in the assessment of brown patch on creeping bentgrass."
