Abstract/Contents:It has been assumed that Rhizoctonia solani was the cause of brown patch. It has been discovered that Rhizoctonia solani and Rhizoctonia zeae are both responsible for brown patch. Rhizoctonia cerealis is the cause of yellow patch. The fungi that cause brown patch are almost always in turfgrass, but the disease only occurs when environmental conditions are favorable. Brown patch occurs in hot, humid weather when the turf has poor drainage and stays wet a long time. The disease is much more severe in lush turf grown at high N levels, or when N, phosphorus, and potassium levels are all low. Yellow patch occurs in cool, wet weather. Brown patch may show symptoms of patches or leaf spots. Turf with yellow patch is chlorotic, with none of the smoke rings you see with brown patch. Pathogenicity tests were conducted to insure that the fungi were pathogens. Methods of disease identification such as fungal stains, enzyme tests, and nuclear stains were developed for rapid identification of these fungi. To control brown patch, when environmental conditions favor disease development, avoid excessive amounts of N, watering at night or late afternoon, and try to remove the dew from the turf, and apply phosphoruous and potassium in accordance with soil test recommendations.
