| Abstract/Contents: | "It has been shown that the ability to detoxify avenacin determines the pathogenicity of Gaeumannomyces graminis (Gg) varieties on oats. Gg var. avenae (Gga) has avenacinase activity and is able to infect oats, whereas Gg var. tritici (Ggt) does not have avenacinase activity and cannot infect oats. It is unknown whether avenacinase activity is also required for infection of creeping bentgrass by Gg. This study was initiated to assess the ability of bentgrass to produce avenacin and subsequently to determine the pathogenicity of Ggt on bentgrass. Bentgrass, wheat, and oat root tips were harvested from seedlings, and sampled for avenacin. Avenacin was not detected in any root samples from bentgrass or wheat but was detected in oats. In conetainer assays established to assess the cross pathogenticity of Ggt on bentgrass, similar symptomatic turf and root colonization was observed between Gga and Ggt isolates." |
