Abstract/Contents: | Describes the "year-round battle" between turf managers and the "consummate guerilla warriors" that are weeds. Says that, "according to the most recent North Carolina Turfgrass Survey," weeds are the "single most significant turf-management problem." Explains that while some weeds can effectively infiltrate all kinds of lawns, some are more prone to affect certain grasses, such as bermudagrass and dallisgrass in the "cool-season areas of North Carolina...where more than 85 percent of lawns are turf-type tall fescue". Discusses the proper ways to use herbicides and how to manage lawns that are being treated with them. Highlights some "cultural practices that combat weeds," noting that "a thick, competitive stand of grass is in itself a lawn's best defense against weeds." States that "pre-emergence herbicides are the most commonly used products by lawn care companies" and that they should be applied "when soil temperatures reach 55 to 60 degrees F." Says that "after weeds have already taken hold in a lawn, the only recourse is either to dig them up individually...or apply a post-emergence herbicide to kill them." |
