Abstract/Contents:"Pythium paddicum, a species that has only been recorded in Japan and USSR, was isolated for the first time on the North American continent from turfgrass roots in 1997 in British Columbia, Canada. The isolated P. paddicum has an appressed colony with rosette pattern on potato dextrose agar. The mycelia were hyaline, some with spherical hyphal bodies. It was homothallic with round oogonia produced at the terminal end of the hyphae. Young oogonia were smooth but developed short blunt projections on the surface in 1-2 weeks. Remnants of 1-4 diclinous clavate antheridia were observed on some mature aplerotic oospores. Sporangia and zoospores were not formed on autoclaved grass leaf medium. Morphological features of this isolate were similar to P. paddicum described in Japan causing blight of various crops. The DNA sequence of the ITS I region of the B.C. isolate was similar to the ITS I sequence of P. paddicum from the type culture collection. Pathogenicity tests with the B.C. isolate showed that it causes stem lesions on seedlings of various plants."
