Abstract/Contents:"Effects of temperature and leaf wetness duration (LWD) on development of gray leaf spot (blast) of Rebel III tall fescue, caused by Pyricularia grisea, were investigated. Disease incidence at three temperature (24, 26, and 28°C) and ten LWDs (4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, and 40 h) was evaluated. Disease incidence increased with increasing temperature and LWD. There were significant interactions between temperature and LWD. The required LWD for disease development was shorter under warmer conditions. Four hours of leaf surface wetness at 24°C was not sufficient for infection by P. grisea, but was sufficient at 26 and 28°C. The relationship between disease incidence and LWD was best described by quadratic models at 26 and 28°C (y = -4.63 + 1.63x - 0.02 x2 and y = -8.38 + 3.14x - 0.04x2, respectively) and a linear model (y = 0.23 + 0.55x) at 24°C. Similar results were obtained when the experiment was repeated twice. Data in these studies will be used to develop a predictive model for the development of gray leaf spot epidemics in tall fescue."
