Abstract/Contents:"Stenotrophomonas maltophilia strain C3, a biocontrol agent for leaf spot caused by Bipolaris sorokiniana, produces a number of antifungal metabolities, including chitinases, in broth cultures containing chitin. Cell-free liquids from 7-day-old cultures applied to tall fescue foliage inhibited conidial germination, germ-tube growth, and leaf spot development compared to water-treated controls. Nearly all disease was suppressed by application of the raw culture fluid to foliage 1 day before pathogen inoculation; some disease suppression was maintained when treatment with the culture fluid preceded pathogen inoculation by 9 days or followed inoculation by 3 days. A 5-fold dilution of the culture fluid reduced disease development, but the suppression level was lower than that of the raw culture fluid. The amount of disease suppression provided by culture fluids was related to the amount of chitinase activity. When culture fluids were appplied along with strain C3 cells, leaf spot control was improved as compared to C3 alone or the culture fluid alone. Application of culture fluid with C3 increased C3 population levels on leaf surfaces by up to 0.8 log units. Thus, C3 metabolites are effective in inhibiting Bipolaris leaf spot and can elevate C3 biocontrol efficacy."
