Abstract/Contents:"Gray leaf spot epiphytotics have been reported with increasing frequency over the past several years on cool-season turf in the Mid-Atlantic region. The impact of nitrogen (N) rate and cutting height on the incidence and severity of gray leaf spot was evaluated in perennial ryegrass and tall fescue field plots. N rates (0, 0.7, 1.4, and 2.7 kg N/90 m2) and cutting heights (3.8, 6.4, and 8.9 cm) were arranged separately in randomized complete block designs with four replicates. Turf was inoculated using conidial suspensions of the causal agent, Pyricularia grisea, and infected transplants. Compared to unfertilized turf, disease incidence decreased 22 percent, 51 percent, and 69 percent at the low, medium, and high N rates, respectively. As the cutting height was raised to 6.4 and 8.9 cm, disease incidence increased 58 percent and 127 percent, respectively. On turf receiving 1.4 kg N/90 m2 and maintained at a cutting height of 6.4 cm, the removal of clippings reduced disease incidence 41 percent."
