| Abstract/Contents: | "During the past decade transformation systems for many turfgrass species have been developed. Herbicide resistance, using the highly effective glufosinate resistance or glyphosate resistance genes, will be achievable for many species. The first commercial transgenic turfgrass will likely be glyphosate-resistant creeping bentgrass, which is in the final stages of development for commercial release. This will allow safe and effective control of Poa annua and other weeds on golf course greens and fairways. Genetic engineering of turfgrasses for improved disease resistance, enhanced abiotic stress tolerance, and other desirable stress tolerance traits is an active area of current research." |
