Abstract/Contents:Wirsbro Meltaway system, an under soil heating system developed in Sweden, uses hot water flowing through cross linked polyethylene piping laid ten inches below the turf, at ten inch centers, and extending one meter beyond the playing surface. The system is powered by a boiler rated at 4.5 million BTU/h which supplied 40 d C water to 160 mm header pipes. From the header pipes the water is distributed to 25 mm diameter polyethylene pipe which runs the length of the field and loops back to a returner header (located near the supply header) for recirculation to the boiler. The system is controlled by two sensors. One sensor located 1 1/2 inches below the surface switches the system on when the soil temperature falls to 2 d C. When the second sensor located 3 inches below the surface registers 2 d C, it opens a three way valve, and the circulating pump draws hot water from the boiler into the system. The system provides a playing surface for 52 weeks a year in Manchester City, England. Installation in a soccer field takes a few to ten days. The 25 mm heating loops can be ploughed in. The system reportedly improves grass germination, and it kept the irrigation system from freezing. The system also operates at lower running costs than its electrically powered counterpart.
