Abstract/Contents:Cultivation is needed if a soil shows a distinct lack of resiliency; the rate of infiltration is reduced and surface runoff increased; reduced rooting depth and extent is evident; increased wilting tendency; reduced shoot growth, and reduced shoot density. Both positive and negative effects are resultant from soil cultivation. Timing is also very important to obtain the best result possible from cultivation. There are numerous methods of cultivation, each with its own particular characteristics, advantages and disadvantages. Compared are the methods of coring, slicing, forking, shattering, spiking and grooving. In addition to being used as a method of soil decompaction, cultivation may also be used to improve root growth; enhance thatch decomposition; aid in the overseeding of turfs and improve soil physical properties when combined with a topdressing program. On an intensely trafficked sports and recreation turf, cultivation is a necessity if a healthy turf of acceptable quality is to be maintained.
