Abstract/Contents:Weeds and undesirable vegetation should be controlled in athletic fields and around the perimeter of the fields for several reasons: 1) weeds compete with turfgrass for available nutrients or moisture, 2) are unsightly, 3) may be noxious or harmful to mankind, 4) increase the frequency of mowing and suppress turfgrass growth. Chemical weed control through the use of herbicides can be accomplished through two types of application: pre-emergent and post-emergent. Most broadleaf weeds and grasses such as Poa annua, Chickweed, Carpetweed, Goosegrass, Crabgrass, Foxtails, Crowfoot grass, ryegrass, Sanbur, Knotweed, and Purslane can be controlled pre-emergent. Weeds such as Dallas grass, Johnsongrass, Henbit, dandelion, etc., can be effectively controlled with post-emergent chemicals. Several factors affect herbicidal performance including temperature, humidity, wind, rainfall, soil types, target species, application equipment and calibration and the application.
