Abstract/Contents:Describes how "deadly wildfires...in Southern California heightened awareness of the fire threat that exists in the forests of western North America." Cites "the combined effects of drought, insects, fire suppression and land management policies" as possible causes of the fires. Discusses the impact of bark beetles on tree weakening and mortality. Stresses that "the immediate need is to reduce the amount of fuel in the forests available to a potential fire." Discusses the use of forest residuals, removed for fire protection, by various companies. Concludes that public officials are trying to find alternative ways to use the wood from the dead trees.
