Abstract/Contents:Downy mildew of St. Augustinegrass, Stenotaphrum secundatum, has been an ever increasing problem in recent years. The disease has been found to be destructive to sod grown in low lying flood prone areas. In this experiment mature St. Augustinegrass plants were pit in one liter pots and flooded. The inoculation of plants with downy mildew was performed in an environment chamber with a temperature of 18°C and humidity at 100%. Plants were removed from the environment chamber and placed in the greenhouse. On the basis of sporangia development morphology, 200 spore production, and host range on the St. Augustinegrass, the fungus causing downy mildew on St. Augustinegrass can be correctly identified at Sclerospora macrospora. This does not preclude the possibility of a different race attacking the St Augustinegrass; however, no physiological races of S. macrospora are known. Initial screening of ten St. Augustinegrass cultivars for resistance to downy mildew suggests that all cultivars may be susceptible however, there sis no evidence of varying degree of disease susceptibility. Control measures include disease free stock, avoiding flooding, use of chemical control (Very limited) and using the more resistant cultivars.
