Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the pros and cons of maintening of artificial and natural fields. Mentions the need for better communication between groundskeepers, supervisors, and owners and converting from natural to artificial fields. Explains that it takes the same number of people to maintain artificial turf as it does natural grass. In maintaining a natural grass field the author had equipment worth three thousand dollars, compared to nearly forty thousand dollars for artificial turf. Instead of mowing, the artificial field is vacuumed which could double or triple the time it takes to mow. Men walk the field to wash out tobacco stains, comb out burns from sudden starts and stops by athletes, remove gum. Many times when the men are working on the turf the temperature can range between 120° to 140°F. Emphasizes the importance of a good maintenance program to maintain artificial turf, but one must also be careful not to wear the turf out through over-maintenance. This work also discusses the methods for converting dirt areas on a natural grass field to grass for football and what preparations are needed to prepare artificial fields for rock concerts. |
