Abstract/Contents:Describes experiments conducted on bermudagrass golf course fairways with a natural uniform weed population. Data are averages from two or more years. States that plots were evaluated for green-up, quality, cover and tolerance to repeated herbicide applications. Good to excellent short season crabgrass control was obtained from all pre-emergence herbicides. Only bensulide, oxadiazion, and prosulfalin controlled crabgrass throughout the summer without additional treatments. Reports that optimum control was achieved when all pre-emergence chemical were applied prior to crabgrass emergence. Bensulide was the only herbicide that controlled crabgrass satisfactorily during the following summer after a single fall treatment. With postemergence treatments, MSMA applied in each of the two applications at 1.0, 1.5, or 2.0 lb/A resulted in excellent crabgrass control. The second treatment should be applied after 12 days. For goosegrass, oxidiazion applied at any time from February until May gave acceptable control (above 75%). For postemergence control of goosegrass completely, but caused severe yellowing and reduction of bermudagrass turf. Combinations of MSMA at 2.0 lb/A and metribuzin at .12 lb/A in 2 applications controlled goosegrass and did not injure bermudagrass as severely. Annual repeated pre-emergence treatments delayed green-up of four bermudagrass. Delayed green-up did no affect quality of turf in May or reduce stand when final ratings were made in August.
