Abstract/Contents:Compares sports turf maintenance in Northern Europe to sports turf maintenance in North America. Lists characteristics of desired sports fields, including moderately close mowing (0.5 - 1.2 inches), firm footing, high shoot density, good wear tolerance, tolerance to cleats and spikes, good recuperative rate, moderately resiliency, uniform surface, and rapid removal of excess water. States that relatively few turfgrass species are well adapted for sports turf use and lists desirable characteristics, including low prostrate growth habit, excellent wear tolerance, good recuperative rate, uniformity, and no surface runners (stems). States that assuming the proper turfgrass species has been selected and the appropriate root zone, surface contours, and subsurface drainage systems provided; then subsequent cultural practices utilized will be simplified and of lower cost. Phosphorus and potassium levels are maintained based on soil test. Reports that traffic effects are minimized by use of coarse textured root zone, provisions for rapid removal of surface water, high shoot density, high potassium level, moderate to minimal nitrogen level, cultivation by coring or slicing, and capability of altering play to different fields.
