| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses turf functions, state of the industry, and research needs. Lists turf functions, including soil erosion and control, dust stabilization, heat dissipation, noise abatement, glare reduction, and safety. States that perennial grasses provide low-cost, attractive surfaces for numerous outdoor leisure, recreational, and competitive sports activities. Reports that home lawns represent the major form of turfgrass usage. Mentions that researchers are involved in developing improved turfgrasses and cultural practices that will require minimal maintenance in terms of cost, water requirements, and energy demands, but at the same time will retain the valuable functional, recreations and ornamental benefits. Briefly mentions that research at Texas A&M University is aimed at identifying specific characteristics that are reliable predictors of tolerance to environmental stress such as low temperature kill, drought and turfgrass wear. |
