Abstract/Contents: | Discusses alternatives to burning grass seed fields after harvest for weed and disease control. Describes the effectiveness of the current trends in weed and disease control employed by the seed industry. Explains that "many farmers who do not chop their straw back onto their fields sell it...to brokers who export it to Asian markets, where it is used for livestock feed." Describes research where "scientists are studying methods of turning straw into electricity or other value-added products, such as alcohol, on the farm, so that it doesn't have to be shipped elsewhere for conversion." |
