Abstract/Contents:"Considering what is nowadays expected of a turf grass, it must be admitted that perennial ryegrass varieties meet the demands for a finer, denser but also a more resistent sward, for a more rapid development of a turf green, for perseverance and for resistance to diseases to a very great extent. Ever since Germany made, in 1968, the registration of turf grasses in the list of varieties compulsory, i.e. when it introduced the protection of seed varieties, the number of these varieties had increased, from 6 in 1969, by nearly tenfold up to 1981 in line with compulsory seed tests. Perennial ryegrass is dominating because of its outstanding properties as a turf grass, reflected in the variety spectrum. In grass mixtures for sports grounds consisting of the "classical" turf grasses Poa pratensis and Festuca rubra, the proportion of Lolium perenne has markedly increased, even though when used for ornamental turfs and fine ordinary turf it is not quite what one would wish. But these deficiencies will be overcome when new varieties are bred."
