| Abstract/Contents: | "White grub control trials were conducted in a city park located in eastern part of El Paso, Texas. Temperature, rainfall, and irrigation were normal during the period of the test. Thatch depth in the common bermudagrass averaged ca. 0.64 cm. The soil was a calcareous Bluepoint sandy loam. Six replications of 15 treatments were established. The 2 by 2 m plots were randomly assigned to replications by larval population prior to treatment. Two adjacent sod samples 30.5 cm2 and 7.6 cm deep were taken from each plot at each sample period. All specimens were counted and recorded at the site. After irrigation, liquid insecticides were sprinkled in water (buffered to pH 7), and granules were applied from shakers. A garden hose was dragged across the plot area for initial incorporation, and 1.3 cm of water was applied with the sprinkler system. Treatments were applied July 27 and counts were made 14, 24, and 53 days after treatment. Natural factors apparently caused substantial mortality, but statistically significant differences existed even 53 days after treatment. At 14 days, every treatment significantly reduced population numbers when compared to the check plots. Diazinon, carbosulfan ( at the high rate), isazophos, and UC70480 (all rates) appeared to have the most rapid effect on grubs. Fewer differences were evident 28 days posttreatment. At 53 days post-treatment, the greatest reductions in grub numbers occurred in the plots treated with UC70480 (high rate) and isazophos, with chlorpyrifos, isophenphos, diazinon, and carbosulfan appearing slightly less effective." |
