Abstract/Contents:"Six insecticides were applied to a fairways at Drumlins C.C. on Sept 11 for control of a mixed population of European/Japanese beetle grubs. The fairway consisted of Kentucky bluegrass (50%), annual bluegrass (45%), and broadleaf weeds (5%). The experimental design wass RCB with 4 replications. Individual plots were 10 ft X 10 ft. Thatch accumulation was ca. 0.25 inch compressed between the fingers. Granular materials were applied with a precalibrated Grandy 2.5 spreader. Liquid materials were premeasured in the laboratory and applied with 3 gal of water through a watering can. All liquid applications were made in 2 directions within each plot. At treatment time, the following environmental and soil conditions existed: air temp, 65 d F; soil temp (1 inch), 64 d F; 62 d F (3 inch); soil type, sandy loam, soil pH, 6.5; water pH, 6.7; soil moisture was 18.2%. Pretreatment were 12.1 grubs per sq. ft. Posttreatment counts were taken 41 days later (Oct 21) by cutting a 1 X 10-ft strip lengthwise through each plot with a mechanical sod cutter (2.25-inch depth) and examining the sod and underlying soil for grubs. Species identifications were made in the field. Three ft samples were taken from each replicate, and mean surviving grubs determined per ft. Dyfonate 50MS at 6 lb ai/a gave the only acceptable control. No phytotoxicity was observed. Turf was in good shape with no evidence of grub damage."
