Abstract/Contents: | Profiles the herbicide Mecoprop (MCPP) which is a commonly used lawn care herbicide. Describes the uses for MCPP and how it is packaged for sale and provides some of the other chemicals that it is mixed with. Describes how MCPP, a member of the pheoxy herbicide family, kills a plant. Defines the symptoms of exposure to MCPP as "red and burning skin, blistering skin, tearing, burning and irritated eyes, blurred vision, nausea, dizziness, headaches, chest pain, and difficulty breathing." States that MCPP is a DNA mutagen which causes the ceasing of DNA synthesis. States that MCPP is a liver and kidney toxin as well as a herbicide which causes anemia. Also explains that MCPP inhibits blood clotting by inhibiting accumulation of platelets. States that exposure to MCPP lowers reproductive success and provides an increased risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Reports that exposure to MCPP lowers immune response. States that "Mecoprop is frequently found in urban streams" and MCPP is harmful to freshwater bacteria which "play key roles in purifying water." States that MCPP has an effect on the mortality rate of birds in an area where it is used and makes plants more susceptible to disease. MCPP also prevents growth of mycorrhizal fungi which are beneficial to plant growth. |
