Abstract/Contents:Discusses the relationship between plants and microbes, and states that "if we are ever going to develop effective and sustainable microbial management, then it is essential to appreciate key elements of the soil, organic matter decomposition, microbial diversity and plant-microbe interactions in the rhizosphere." Emphasizes the importance of understanding soil habitat and textural differences. Lists several physical properties that affect the soil environment and defines the rhizosphere as "the soil zone influenced by plant root (a region characterized by enhanced microbial activity)." Concludes that "soil microbiology is not just a passing trend. Given the pressures to manage amenity turf in a responsible and environmentally sensitive manner, the ability to incorporate effective root, soil and microbial management into an overall strategy is likely to become increasingly important."
