Abstract/Contents:Describes the importance of sprayer calibration and discusses how this technique saves time and money. States that "fine-tuning a boom sprayer is necessary to ensure its accuracy. With correct calibration, superintendents can determine the exact liquid being applied over a given area, taking into account various nozzles, operating pressures, travel speeds and other conditions. Knowing this output is essential for calculating the precise amount of product required per tank, and it also shows spray output uniformity across the boom." Presents a survey "carried out in Ohio, Nebraska and North Dakota" to test the accuracy of sprayers. Results include that "over half of the tested boom sprayers missed their desired pesticide application rate by more than 10 percent." Concludes that "having such a high percentage of products misapplied is scary - poor uniformity can cause undue stress to the turf, not to mention failure to properly control disease or weeds." Describes different ways to calibrate sprayers and provides information regarding basic calibration steps. Emphasizes "it is important to keep records of all aspects of the calibration procedure...theses records can be used as a reference and also document when the sprayer was calibrated, if a problem such as a drift complaint arose."
