Abstract/Contents: | Tom Fazio discusses his early work in golf course design and construction during the 1960s and 1970s. Explains that "I started in that era [the 1960s] where we would design and build on a turn-key basis, mainly because we didn't know what we were doing...We knew how to do it from the field, but in terms of drawing a set of plans and actually going out to bid, the industry wasn't that sophisticated back then." Describes the "shoot from the hip" style of golf course construction that was utilized in this era. Discusses how his uncle's involvement with "friends of the game" helped open doors for getting the PGA Tour started and for construction work. Discusses a reconstruction project Fazio is currently undertaking, rebuilding his uncle's Jack Rabbit course at Champions Golf Club. Describes the golf course construction boom of the early 1970's. |
