Abstract/Contents:Announces the launch of a program called "GreenScapes" by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and states that "the program promotes practices and products that meet the users' needs in landscaping but are more environmentally friendly as they are designed to preserve natural resources and prevent waste and pollution." States that the program "focuses on education and outreach, but is also a partnership program - a formal agreement with government and industry leaders partnering and committing to exert a powerful, unified influence over the reuse, and recycling of natural resources in large land use operation." Describes what the GreenScapes Alliance is and describes each of the things in which it does. Lists prospective participants of the program. Suggests business' should focus on the "4 Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rebuy)" in order to improve themselves. Suggests avoiding products that need constant replacing when landscaping, participating in on-site composting, reducing use of plastic silt fencing to help deal with erosion, reducing water usage and to reduce pesticide usage. Provides examples of reusing materials. Suggests sending wastes off to be composted elsewhere if there is not adequate room for composting on site. Suggests that when buying supplies, to look for already recycled materials and provides examples. Details the numbers of compost materials, tires, and plastic used in the U.S. and how much is reused.
