Abstract/Contents: | A history on Gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O)-calcium sulfate + 2 water molecules structured soils, maintaining good soils, and correcting high soil Ph or sulfur deficiencies. Other beneficial properties are given. It is an abundant soft and crystalline material. High quality gypsum is 87-95% calcium sulfate with neural pH and is non-toxic. Gypsum is good for high clay soils and poor textured soils. Different soil types need different amounts of gypsum: 1) Acid soils need gypsum and lime combination 2) Saline soils need 1000 lb per acre of gypsum 3) Alkali soils need great amounts - 3 to 4 tons. Also given are practical applications of gypsum. 1) Prior to seeding, gypsum and mulch should be tiled 4 to 6 inches into the top soil. 2) Use this mentioned mix (above) around freshly planted ornamentals. 3) Surface application can be used separate or with mulches, fertilizers, or lime but must be flowed by irrigation. 4) Athletic line marking. 5) Correct damage to turf and ornamentals from winter road salt splash. Using gypsum is an inexpensive process. Applications can be made at any time but remember to irrigate after. |
