| Abstract/Contents: | The past year, we tested several experimental chemicals for control of white clover in bluegrass. Our turf was a mixture of approx. 50% common Kentucky bluegrass, 15% annual bluegrass, 10% miscellaneous grassy and broadleaf weeds and 25% white clover. The chemicals we tested included Garlon materials (Dow Chemical) which were mixed in a spray tank with an amine formulation of 2,4-D before application to plots; Dacamine and MCPP + 2,4-D, formulations of Diamond Shamrock Co.; Trex-san, a product of Mallinckrodt, Inc., which contains 2,4-D + MCPP + dicamba. We made all applications of chemicals on the norming of May 24th. Then on June 17, four weeks later, we checked results. MCPP + 2,4-D (at 3 lb/A), both formulations of Garlon + 2,4-D (1 + 0.5 and 1 + l lb/A) and Trex-san (1.5 lb/A) has given almost complete control of white clover. Dacamine applied at a rate of 0.9 lb/A and a second 2,4-D amine source were ineffective. The higher 1.8 lb rate of Dacamine gave partial but unsatisfactyory control of clover. Both rates of Garlon 4 caused slight discoloration of plots (which was obvious by June 6) compared with the color of check plots. Discoloration persisted through June and early July. Observations were discontinued by July 15 as non-irrigated turf become dormant in response to heat and drought stress. |
